Editing

Editing our sequence

We have started filming from the second part of the sequence as the first one is going to be in the office, and for it we have to get an office to film in. The second part is now put together and edited.

We haven't done anything with the sound yet, however the shots are in the right place and at the right time. The sound will be added at the very end of editing, when we have the whole sequence. Editing did not take too long as we were already sure about which shot was going to be where.

First Day Of Filming

First Day Of Filming

On our first day of filming we went to Liverpool Station just as we planned. As we tried to get a permission to film in a station we were told we cannot as the law does not allow it unless we get a permission through the internet first. As our filming location had to be changed, we were changing the plot as well just a little bit. We decided to film next to tower bridge, so it could be seen in a background, however, we were told we cannot do that
once again. We walked just a little bit away from the bridge and found a place where we could do our filming.

Modern thriller openings

Opening of thrillers

History of violence

The thriller starts with a long shot of a house/hotel. It is a nice, warm, sunny day and nothing looks suspicious. Two men coming out of the house/ hotel. Even though they do not look suspicious at the opening scene, we still know who the killer is from the short beginning of the movie as later on we see dead bodies lying after their visit to the office. The beginning of this movie has a very clear cliffhanger as the audience is left without knowing why these kind of things are happening, and why the killers kill.

Zodiac

The opening sequence starts with a birds eye view shot of a city on a 4th of July evening. Its dark, however the street lights are on and the streets are full of life. The camera shows a tracking shot from a car window, showing people having fun. As a female driver meets her male friend they decides to go some place to eat, however they does not want to be in a crowd and changes their mind, goes to a back-block where is dark and quiet. It seems like a good idea for a couple and obviously for a killer too.

Brick

This film starts with quite long shots of a teenage boy looking at a dead girl laying in a water. The environment is dark, the weather looks cold. The boy looks nervous, however he does not help the girl which could mean that he did something to her himself. There is no way the audience could tell what has happened and that what pulls toward watching the film.

No country for old men

Long shot of horizont, sunrise. Shots of nature, desert, a man talking in the background, telling a story. The audience is to see a police car and policeman taking a man to his car, putting his unusual weapon on a front seat. They drives away to a police station. While thepoliceman is reporting the situation, the arrested man stands up and chocks the policeman. The killer takes handcuffs off and washes blood from his hands, then takes his weapon and leaves with a police car. Until then, he does not say a word which makes the audience feel an interest in him, however, the weapon he uses is even more interesting. The killer stops an old man and asks him to step out of the car, then with a help of his unusual weapon he shoots the man. The audience is kept in suspense and questioning who is the man and what is the weapon that he uses to kill.

2nd and 3rd Production Meeting

I have not been in the 2nd and 3rd production meetings, however I did catch up with my group and ideas they have discussed in the meetings.

On the 2nd production meeting my group has discussed the shots we are going to use in our sequence. They decided about the angles and length of shots as well as how to make them more affective on the audience.

On the 3rd production meeting my group has finished drawing the storyboards as well as started on planning the details in the film, for example filming location and tasks for individual member of the group. The meeting followed the conclusion that Naomi and Courtney are going to be the directors of the sequence, Arsena will be the main character in the sequence and do the make up  and I will be the editor of the sequence. My group has also contacted some people and asked them to cooperate with us when filming and they agreed to be characters in our sequence.

Studio Idents

Studio Idents

Usually every film company has their logo which keeps on changing over the years. The most known companies has their logos for a long time and they are easily recognized. Others, indies, that are not recognized that easily also has their logos, however their history would not go as far.
Here are some well known and not that popular companies and their logo's histories.

Paramount Pictures

Paramount is a worldwide film
company making loads of
blockbusters. This company
started its logo from a
black&white drawing in 1917
and kept it that way until
1967. Later on the drawing
was changed into a picture
that seems
more alive. The colors were
added in 1953 as well, the
logo was kept that way until
1975 and when the technology
came out to be easy to use
(in 2010) and editing was
available the logo was changed
with realistic pictures,
brighter colors and 3D view.

DreamWorks

DreamWorks logo started of as a
boy on the moon. It came out
through the imagination of Steven
Spielberg. The image was hand drawn.
Later on, the cloud cover was
added as well. This was decided
as the company and its popularity
was growing, the company wanted
to add some graphics on to their
logo to make it look more modern.
The logo used these days is not
much of a different from the first
ones, the only difference is the
colors. The letters in a name were
given different, bright colors,
as well as the clouds that were made
brighter as if they were changed from
the night time to day.

Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures was founded in
1912. They didn't use an on-screen
logo until 1914. The second logo
was used at the time of 1924-1927.
The logo was changed a little bit
over the time. It was made to look
a little more live in 1936 and
kept that way for 10 years until
1946. The logo was made brighter
then and stayed that way until 1963.
Then the colors were added and the
logo became bright. In the gap of
this transformation there was a lot
of tiny little changes made. The
final logo that is used today as well
shows earth and stars around it as
well as a word UNIVERSAL in capital
letters covering the earth.

Film4 Production

Film4 is an independent film production company. This company supports the independent film makers. This
company has a logo that is not
recognized as easily worldwide
but is well know in UK. There
is not a lot of this logo history
as there is no need for it to change.

Movie Unknown

Unknown

This thriller is the way more modern than Hitchcock's 'Rope' or 'North By Northwest'. The movie 'Unknown' was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, released in 2011 and it was based on 2003 French novel by Didier Van Cauwalaert

In this thriller audience does not know the villain and the hero from the very beginning. Audience is made to believe that the main character, Dr Martin Harris, is the hero of the movie.

Dr Martin Harris (Liam Neeson)

The villain of the movie was not known till the very end. The only thing the audience is allowed to know is that Dr Martin Harris is wanted dead and people are trying to kill him.

Jones (Stipe Erceg)
Smith (Olivier Schneider)

Car Chase Scene

Train Scene

In this thriller there is a lot of confusion and questioning. To make the thriller more effective on the audience, the director has used a lot of close-ups, fast editing and disorientating sounds. These effects makes the important scenes feel more unpredictable and intense.

The movie has frequent action and it makes the audience feel like they are the part of the movie and has no time to waste, no time for rest.

The McGuffin of the movie is Prince Shada who has a plan about how to provide food to whole world including starving countries.

This thriller stands perfectly in the lines of Todorov's Narrative Theory:

  • (A state of equilibrium) Dr Martin Harris comes to Berlin with his wife to give a presentation.

  • (A disruption of that order by event) Dr Martin Harris leaves his suitcase in an airport. While going back to take it he is involved into an accident.

  • (A recognition that disorder has occurred) Dr Martin Harris wakes up in a hospital and leaves to look for his wife. His wife is acting like she does not know who he is and there is a new man called Dr Martin Harris.

  • (An attempt to repair the damage of the disruption) Dr Martin Harris tries to find out what is going on. He seeks for help to figure out why someone would want his identity and afterwards he helps to save a lot of people.

  • (A return or restoration of a NEW equilibrium) Dr Martin Harris changes his name and starts a new life with a woman who helped him.
