Movie Genre
In film theory, genre refers to the method based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed. It is popular to set genres to the movies as it informs the audience about plot of the movie and allows to choose whether to watch it or not. Also, knowing the genre of the movie is comfortable to parents of young children as they foreknow whether they can allow to watch the movie or not.
These are the main genres known:
Action
Action movies are very similar to adventure, which is why they are usually categorized together. In these movies the main character usually takes a risky turn which leads to desperate situations such as explosions, fight scenes, etc.
Adventure
Adventure movies are about the main character who travels to epic or distant places to accomplish something. The character has a mission and faces obstacles to get to his final destination.
Comedy
Comedy movies are made to make the audience laugh. They are about comical events and funny situations. There can be one or few main characters in comedy movies, however usually they are not represented as very smart or taking important roles in workplaces.

Crime
Crime movies are about crime that was, is being or about to be committed. It could also be a story told by a criminal, or a story about a criminal's life.
Erotic
Erotic literature comprises fictional and factual stories and accounts of human sexual relationships which have the power to or are intended to arouse the audience sexually.
Fantasy
Fantasy movies are about magic or supernatural forces, rather than technology, though it often is made to include elements of other genres, such as science fiction elements, for instance, computers or DNR, if it happens to take place in a modern or future era. Also, fantasy movies can be recognised by magical or mythical creatures that shows up in them.
Historical
Historical movies are about a real person or event that has actually happened. They re-create the facts and usually tells the story from the person's, who has lived through the story, point of view.
Horror
Horror movies are made to scare or frighten the audience. There are different ways to do that; some horror movies includes ghosts, others may include zombies and others scares the audience with insane killers.

Realistic
Realistic movies are made to look like the stories could happen in life, such as losing a person that is close to you and ongoing recovery from such loss. This genre movies could include other movies such as romance, action and historical.
Romance
In these movies there is usually a love story told. They are also more likely to have a dramatic turn and a happy ending. These movies can be also mixed with other genres such as comedy, fantasy fiction, realistic fiction or action-adventure.

Science fiction
Science fiction is similar to fantasy, except stories in this genre use scientific understanding to explain the universe that it takes place in. It generally includes or is centered on the presumed effects or ramifications of computers or machines; travel through space, time or alternate universes; alien life-forms; genetic engineering or other such things.
Thriller
Thriller movies are usually playing with audiences fear and excitement. It has traits from the suspense genre and often from the action, adventure or mystery genres, but the level of terror makes it borderline horror fiction at times as well. It generally has a dark or serious theme, which also makes it related to drama.
There are a lot of different movie genres and it is very confusing when it comes to choosing a movie. Also, genres are not the only things we are supposed to choose from, there are also a lot of movie sub-genres and it makes it only harder.
